Chief Executive Officer, Strong Disability Advocates
As the CEO of Strong Disability Advocates and bring over 30 years of total experience to this position as it relates to my comprehensive work in the disability arena.
Shareen Young-Chavez is an established disability advocate, and motivational speaker who has dedicated nearly two decades to advancing the rights of individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays through her work at the Social Security Disability Administration, where she served as an analyst, supervisor, and Medical Professional Relations Officer. She is passionate about working with and fighting for the rights of individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays.
Simultaneously Shareen has held titles such as President of The Arc of Virginia and has been deeply involved in disability advocacy efforts. She is a graduate of the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities, Partner’s in Policymaking (PIP), a leadership training program for disability advocates. Also, she served as a primary witness for the Department of Justice in the Settlement Agreement case against the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Her spectacular career includes appointments by two Virginia Governors: Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam. She served on their Community Integration Advisory Commission boards. During her tenure, she helped develop new policies that improved access to community resources for Virginians with disabilities. Her most fulfilling and rewarding title, however, is that of Mom. She is the mother of a beautiful son, Stefon, who is diagnosed with intellectual disabilities and significant medical health impairments. Her desire is that every special needs family might stay
together in the community with supportive measures in place to ensure their success. It was through her own journey that not only has she found success with Home and Community Based Services (HCBS); a program that provides support for individuals with disabilities to live in their communities. She ensured that other special needs families, either biological or handpicked, can live successfully in the community as well.
Inspired by her own experiences navigating the various challenges of accessing supports and services, Shareen became passionate about helping other families like hers, to find similar support and success. Through her work, Shareen has helped many families access vital services, enabling those with special needs to thrive at home and in their communities. Shareen is bilingual.
She can read, write, and speak in Spanish. She strives to educate families about their rights and advocates for them to use the Sponsored Residential component of their community living (CL) Medicaid waiver.
